Body shop vs dealership for collision repair
5 min read · 2026-09-12
The myth: dealerships are the only ones who can fix it right
Collision repair quality comes from the technician's training, the equipment and the paint system — not the sign on the building. Independent shops hold the same industry certifications (I-CAR, ASE) and use the same manufacturer repair procedures. Many dealerships, in fact, don't have a body shop at all and send their body work to independents.
What matters is whether the shop follows the factory repair procedure for your specific car — ask any shop that question, and a good one will answer happily.
Where dealerships genuinely differ
Dealerships have direct parts pipelines for their brand, which can matter on a brand-new or unusual model. For cars under factory warranty with mechanical damage, there can be paperwork advantages too. Outside of those cases, the differences mostly run the other way: independents typically schedule faster, and you deal with the people actually working on your car instead of a service lane.
What independents do well
An independent body shop lives on repeat customers and reviews, not a franchise agreement. You talk to the estimator who wrote your estimate and the technician doing the work. Scheduling is usually days, not weeks. And because independents work on every make and model year-round, older cars and mixed-brand households are routine, not an exception.
Warranty-wise, having body work done at a certified independent does not void your vehicle warranty — federal law (the Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act) protects your right to choose where your car is repaired.
How to choose either way
Ask three questions of any shop, dealership or independent: Do you follow manufacturer repair procedures? Are your technicians I-CAR or ASE certified? Will you give me a written estimate before work starts? The answers tell you more than the logo does.
