Check engine light on? What it means and what it doesn't
6 min read · 2026-09-12
Steady light vs flashing light
A steady check engine light means the car's computer has logged a fault and wants it looked at — soon, but not necessarily today. A flashing light is different: that's usually an active misfire dumping unburned fuel into the exhaust, and it can destroy a catalytic converter in miles. Flashing means drive gently and get it checked immediately.
If the light comes with symptoms — rough running, loss of power, a smell, a gauge climbing — treat it as urgent regardless of whether it flashes.
The five most common causes we see
Loose or failed gas cap is the classic one — the evaporative emissions system detects a pressure leak and flags it. After that: oxygen sensors, ignition coils and plugs, catalytic converter efficiency codes, and mass airflow sensors. Chicago's cold snaps also expose weak batteries and aging sensors that were marginal all summer.
The same code can have several possible causes, though. A code tells you which system complained, not which part to replace — which is why parts-store code reads sometimes send people buying sensors they didn't need.
What a real diagnostic involves
Reading the code is step one, not the diagnosis. From there a technician looks at live data from the engine computer — fuel trims, sensor readings, misfire counts — and tests the components the code points at. That's the difference between 'your car has a P0420' and 'here's what's actually wrong and what it takes to fix it.'
One more Illinois-specific note: if your light is on, your car will fail its emissions test automatically. If your renewal is coming up, get the fault diagnosed first rather than testing and failing.
When to stop driving
Flashing light, overheating, oil pressure warnings, loud knocking, or a car that won't stay running — park it. Everything else, book a diagnostic and drive normally in the meantime. Most check engine faults are inexpensive when caught early and expensive when ignored.
