Brakes grinding? What that sound means and how urgent it is

5 min read · 2026-09-30

Squealing vs grinding

A high-pitched squeal when you brake is often the built-in wear indicator — a small metal tab designed to make noise when the pads are getting thin. It's a warning, not an emergency. Book a brake check soon.

Grinding is different. A harsh metal-on-metal sound usually means the pad material is gone and the backing plate is scraping the rotor. That damages the rotor quickly and reduces stopping power. Grinding means get it checked now.

Grinding that isn't worn pads

Sometimes grinding comes from a stone or debris caught between the rotor and the dust shield, or from a light layer of rust on the rotors after the car sits in wet weather — common in Chicago. Rust noise usually disappears after a few stops. If it doesn't, it's not rust.

Other warning signs to take seriously

A soft or sinking brake pedal, the car pulling to one side when braking, a vibrating steering wheel or pedal, a burning smell, or a brake warning light on the dash. Any of these, combined with noise, is a reason to stop driving and have the car inspected.

Why waiting costs more

Catching worn pads early usually means replacing pads. Waiting until they grind often means pads and rotors, and sometimes calipers. Road salt also seizes brake hardware over winter, so a fall brake check is worth it. Book an appointment and we'll inspect them and give you a written estimate before any work.
