Car AC blowing warm air? The most common causes
4 min read · 2026-09-30
Low refrigerant — usually from a leak
The most common cause is low refrigerant. AC systems are sealed, so low refrigerant almost always means a leak somewhere — a hose, seal, or the condenser at the front of the car, which takes a beating from stones and road salt. Recharging without fixing the leak only buys a few weeks.
Compressor and clutch problems
The compressor pumps refrigerant through the system. If its clutch doesn't engage, or the compressor is failing, you'll get warm air — sometimes with a squeal or rattle when the AC is switched on.
Electrical and blend-door faults
A blown fuse, failed relay or bad pressure sensor can stop the compressor from running at all. And if you get cold air on one side but warm on the other, the blend door actuator behind the dash may be stuck. These are electrical diagnoses, not refrigerant problems.
Get it diagnosed, not just recharged
A proper AC check measures system pressures, looks for leaks with dye or a detector, and tests the compressor and electrical controls. That tells you what's actually wrong the first time. Book an appointment and we'll find the cause before recommending any repair.
