Deciding what to do
Insurance claim or pay out of pocket? How to decide
6 min read · 2026-09-12
The deductible math comes first
If the repair costs less than your deductible, there's no decision — insurance pays nothing, so you pay the shop directly. The gray zone is damage that's slightly above your deductible. A claim might pay out a few hundred dollars, but it goes on your record and can affect your premium at renewal.
The right first step is a written estimate, before you decide anything. Until you know the real number, you're guessing. A free estimate costs you nothing and makes the claim-or-pay decision obvious in most cases.
When a claim clearly makes sense
Another driver is at fault and their insurance is paying. The damage is substantial — airbags, structural work, multiple panels. There's any chance of hidden damage behind what you can see. Or the other party was injured or might claim injury later. In all of those, file the claim. That's what the coverage is for.
Hit-and-runs and parking lot damage with no other party usually fall under your collision or comprehensive coverage — same deductible math applies.
Your shop, your choice — it's Illinois law
Whether you claim or not, you choose the repair shop. Illinois law is explicit: your insurance company cannot require you to use their preferred or 'network' shop. They can suggest one; they can't make you. A shop that works for you — not the carrier — writes the estimate around what your car actually needs.
We work with every major carrier and handle the claim paperwork either way, including the supplements when teardown reveals damage the first estimate missed.
The one thing not to do
Don't leave damage unrepaired because you're undecided. Broken bumper clips, cracked lamp housings and chipped paint all get worse — and more expensive — with time and weather. Get the estimate, then decide. The estimate doesn't commit you to anything.
