Choosing a shop
7 questions to ask before choosing a Chicago body shop
5 min read · 2026-09-12
1. Will I get a written, itemised estimate before work starts?
A verbal number is not an estimate. You want a written document listing the parts, labour and materials — and a commitment that you'll be called for approval if teardown reveals anything new. Every legitimate shop works this way. If one won't put it in writing, walk.
2. Are your technicians certified?
I-CAR and ASE certifications mean the people touching your car have been trained and tested on current repair methods. Modern cars — high-strength steel, aluminum panels, driver-assistance sensors — genuinely require it. Ask, and look for the certificates on the wall or the website.
3. Do you follow manufacturer repair procedures?
Every carmaker publishes repair procedures for each model. A quality shop pulls the procedure for your specific car and follows it. This is the single best technical question you can ask, because a shop that does this will happily say so — and one that doesn't will change the subject.
4. How do you handle my insurance company?
If you're claiming, you want a shop that deals with the carrier directly — paperwork, photos, and especially supplements, the additional damage found after teardown that the first estimate missed. Ask whether they handle supplements in-house or whether you'll be the middleman. You shouldn't be the middleman.
5. What warranty comes with the work?
Reputable shops warranty their workmanship. Get the warranty in writing and ask what it covers — paint, parts, labour — and for how long. A shop confident in its work puts this in writing without being asked twice.
6. Can I see recent work and recent reviews?
Photos of actual repairs and reviews from the last few months tell you what your result will look like. Look for reviews that mention communication and whether the final bill matched the estimate — those matter more than the star count alone.
7. Who do I call with questions while my car is in the shop?
A real answer is a name and a phone number. You should know who to call for a status update, and the shop should be proactive about calling you first. At our shop, that's the same family that's been answering the phone on Northwest Highway since 1952.
