Car care basics
How often do you really need an oil change?
4 min read · 2026-09-30
Start with your owner's manual
Most modern cars running synthetic oil are designed for intervals well beyond the old 3,000-mile rule — many manufacturers list somewhere between 5,000 and 10,000 miles. Your owner's manual, or the oil-life monitor on the dash, is the real answer for your car.
Why Chicago driving is often 'severe service'
Manuals usually list two schedules: normal and severe. Severe includes short trips where the engine never fully warms up, stop-and-go traffic, extreme cold and heat, and towing. That describes a lot of city driving. If that's you, follow the shorter interval.
Signs you're overdue
Oil-change or oil-pressure warning light, oil that looks dark and gritty on the dipstick, a low oil level between changes, or louder engine noise. Low oil pressure is an emergency — pull over and shut the engine off.
Make it count
An oil change is also a chance to catch small problems early: leaks, worn belts, low fluids, tire wear. We check the basics every time. Book your appointment online and we'll have you back on the road the same day.
